Recently, I put together a list of upcoming scheduled UFC fights. One of these fights features veteran bantamweight Ivan Menjivar taking on the debuting Azamat Gashimov. I couldn’t help but notice that Gashimov will enter with an ELO rating of 1782 – a dismal rating for an aspiring UFC fighter. Among current UFC fighters, only Leonard Garcia and Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto have lower ratings.
But Gashimov has an overall record of 7-1 in professional MMA. This normally would accompany an ELO rating of at least 1900, and usually higher. So I took a closer look at Gashimov’s record.
As it turns out, ALL EIGHT of Gashimov’s career opponents had a record of exactly 0-0 when he fought them. That’s right, Gashimov has done nothing in professional MMA except fight opponents making their professional debut.
Apparently Gashimov trains under Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn. For all the bluster about how Dana White thinks Greg Jackson is ruining MMA, they must be on pretty good terms for the UFC to sign Gashimov to a contract. I can only imagine that Jackson is extremely high on his talent.
But I can’t get over that record of his. How does a fighter go from fighting newbies to taking on a hardened veteran like Menjivar? I just don’t see this ending well for Gashimov.
